AboutΒΆ
I am a creative practitioner living in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. My eclectic interests include music, kinetic sculpture, robotics, and education. My formal education was in engineering and I earned a PhD in Robotics. I also studied trumpet performance with Anthony Pasquarelli. My informal fine arts education started by mentoring artists in the use of technology. This connection gradually evolved into my own practice and eventually into a professional role as an IDeATe instructor at Carnegie Mellon University.
What I practice and teach is an exploration of movement and dynamics. A kinetic sculpture is a moving form made of material and software, but I focus on the form as a vehicle for a performance unfolding in time. Musical instruments are machines which extend our expressive capacity to create sound. Similarly, robotic sculptures can manifest our gestures over time and space to extend our capacity for expressive movement. I am especially interested in using the physical dynamics of embodied systems to create expressive movement, e.g. using freely flowing fabric to elaborate simple motor actuation into complex dynamic movement. With this I aspire toward performances which use human intuition and gesture to discover inspiring machine choreography.
